The apartment is located on the fourth floor of a typical 60s residential building in Thessaloniki’s city center. The scope of work has been the remodeling of the apartment in order to meet contemporary standards and requirements of high-end, short-term rental through online platforms such as Airbnb.
Natural light, functional layout and storage were three key elements that had to be fulfilled by the new concept. The layout has been modified while maintaining the basic organization close to the original. All interior walls have been demolished, allowing natural light to reach the core of the apartment from both sides. The dividing wall between living room and bedroom has been replaced by a semi-transparent closet which extends all the way along the entrance corridor, maximizing the storage capacity. The bench of the dining table is the extension of the open kitchen, whereas the dividing wall between kitchen and bathroom has been designed accordingly, creating adequate recesses, in order to fit a large refrigerator, an oven and a washing machine along with some storage space.
Semi-transparent polycarbonate panels allow light to penetrate through the closet, while bright white walls act as a neutral background for vivid upholstery and furniture colors to pop out. All furniture, except of chairs, are custom, original designs for the apartment. Mirrors, placed at the end of the corridor as well as the back wall of the dining table create the illusion of a much larger space. Every surface of the open kitchen is white (including the marble flooring) which helps reflect light in space. In the bathroom, black iron elements contrast with the space’s bright white tiles. The cozy natural oak wood has been selected not only for the flooring of living room and bedroom but also for wall paneling and the majority of furniture.
