NURSERY/KINDERGARTEN COMPETITION

Nursery/Kindergarten competition

The Nursery–Kindergarten project in Papagou, Attica is designed as a clear and functional educational building that prioritizes outdoor space, natural light, and efficient organization. The building is positioned along the north-east and north-west edges of the plot, allowing the southern part of the site to remain open and form a protected courtyard for daily activities.

The building follows a 3×3-meter grid that defines both its form and internal layout. This approach supports a direct relationship between interior spaces and the courtyard, reinforced by shaded walkways, terraces, and semi-open areas.

Programmatic organization follows a simple vertical logic. Infant-related functions are located on the ground floor, ensuring direct access to outdoor spaces, while classrooms for older children are placed on the upper level. A roofed terrace extends the learning spaces outdoors and is defined by an external metal frame that provides shading and protection.

Classrooms facing the courtyard feature full-height openings that allow spaces to open outward during warmer months and support natural ventilation. Secondary functions, including circulation and support spaces, are concentrated along the northern side of the building, where openings are limited.

Landscape elements along the site’s perimeter act as a buffer between the building and the surrounding urban environment and provide gathering areas for parents. A secondary entrance connected to the administrative area helps manage peak-hour circulation. Overall, the project creates a calm and flexible setting for early childhood education.
